Description

A manor house, dating to the 16th century, now divided into two dwellings, is located in Hewelsfield Quayside, Brockweir. The building is constructed with rendered, double Roman tile on the right and concrete tile on the left, with three small brick stacks. It has a T-plan design, notable for its wide gable to the front and a gabled stair turret on the far right, as well as a deep wing. The front elevation has two and a half storeys, featuring late 20th century aluminium casements above a similar casement and aluminium glazed door. The gable has a two-light casement below a framed and moulded bull’s-eye window. The main façade has a pattern of chamfered mullion stone casements with arched heads and stopped drips, including two-light, three-light, and two-over-two-light arrangements. A late 20th century door and porch are centrally positioned. The return gable on the right features a stopped bull’s-eye window, two small lights, and one blocked light, relating to the staircase.

The interior of the manor house includes a fine large bressummer fireplace and a two-flight spiral stair with some solid treads. At the upper level, there is some exposed timber framing between the front block and projecting wing. A ground floor room on the right has a heavy beam and rafter ceiling. The original roof structure comprises two purlins. While one half of the building has been significantly modernised, it remains a historically important survival.
