Description
Brockweir Bridge is a bridge built in 1906, designed by S.W. and A.L. Yockney from Victoria Street, Westminster, with construction carried out by E. Finch and Company of Chepstow.
The bridge features plate girder construction, with cast iron and steel parapets and stone abutments. It has two sets of paired cylinders that are cross-braced to form piers, and three spans of lattice girders create the sides of the bridge, with a roadway running between them. A narrow tarmacadam pavement with stone kerbing is located on the south side of the roadway. The girders and roadway connect to stone parapets at either end, which are built into stone abutments on raised river embankments, elevating the structure to allow clearance for tall-masted river vessels. The ironwork is painted.
The abutments and stone parapets are made from a mix of grey and pink sandstone. The central section of the abutments, beneath the roadway, is predominantly pink, while the splayed buttresses and roadside parapet are noticeably greyer. Approaching the bridge from either end, grassed embankments and white-painted post and rail fencing are attached to the stone parapets. An iron maker's plate on the bridge is inscribed with "E FINCH & Co. LIMTD ENGINEERS 1908 IRONFOUNDERS CHEPSTOW." Another plate marks repair work done in 1986 by Sheppard Adkins (Engineering) Ltd. Additionally, an inlaid slate tablet on the northern parapet commemorates the bridge's centenary year in 2006.
