Description
Clearwell Castle features a gatehouse and flanking stables, which have been partially converted into two houses. These structures date from the mid-18th century and are built from rubble stone, topped with an embattled parapet and a stone slate pitched roof. The overall layout is U-shaped, consisting of two storeys, with the central gatehouse rising to three storeys. The gatehouse has a two-storey pointed arch and twin large pointed arch openings at the south ends. The facade is regular, showcasing four square two-light mullioned windows on the first floor, and two two-light Y tracery pointed arch windows in the centre on the ground floor. Pointed stone archways flank the gatehouse and are located in the corners. Above the archway in the gatehouse, there is a coat of arms beneath a single two-light stone mullioned window, which has decorative slit ventilators on either side; the top floor is glazed while the lower floors are filled. The southeast corner was noted to be in a ruinous state at the time of the survey on June 19, 1984.
