Clearwell Castle - Gatehouse and 8/77 flanking stables

Gatehouse and flanking stables, now partially converted to 2 houses. Mid C18. Rubble stone, embattled parapet and stone slate pitched roof. U-shape. 2 storeys, with centre 3 storey embattled gatehouse with 2 storey pointed arch, and with twin large pointed arch openings on south ends. Regular facade with 4 square 2-light mullioned windows on first floor, and two 2-light Y tracery pointed arch windows in centre on ground floor, and pointed stone archways flanking gatehouse and in corners. Coat of arms over archway in gatehouse, below single 2-light stone mullioned window with flanking decorative slit ventilators, top floor glazed, lower floors filled. Ruinous in south east corner at time of survey (19.6.84).
