Description
Porth-Mawr Gatehouse is a two-storey crenellated gateway that is set forward from the adjoining walls, featuring early 19th-century picturesque alterations. The structure is built of rubble masonry with dressed quoins and is covered in extensive creeper.
The gatehouse has a battlemented parapet, a small turret at the northeast angle, and an octagonal stone chimney stack. On the first floor, there is a four-light window beneath a hood mould, with a small stair light to the right. The ground floor features a pointed arched entrance with weathered mouldings, a hood, and stops; it has later pointed doors adorned with strapwork panelling and openwork tops.
Inside, the gatehouse has a two-bay layout with a 19th-century sexpartite ribbed vault that includes decorative bosses. There are low rubble seats on either side and a six-panel door to the right. A chamfered inner arch leads to the house, which has a two-light window with a square head and hood mould.
