Description
There are two chest tombs located in the churchyard, about 16 meters north of the center of the north face of the tower of the Church of St. Peter and St. Paul. The southern tomb dates from 1781 and features a flat lid with a plain moulded edge. It has quarter square corner balusters that are carved with square scrolls and leaves. The south side has a narrow top margin, with the main central part flanked by narrow rectangular ends. The center head has wings at the top, surrounded by rococo scrolls. The end panels have pendant rings with flowers below, and the ends have rectangular panels with rococo scrolling around the edges. This tomb is dedicated to Mary Harper, who died in 1781, and includes a long 's' used in the inscription. An inscription for her husband, Thomas Harper, who died in 1785, has been added, along with a record of their children who died before their parents on the end. There are later inscriptions on the lid.
Immediately to the north is the second tomb, which also has a flat lid and a plain moulded edge. The north face mirrors the south side of the Mary Harper monument but features flowers and ribbon edging in the main central panel instead of scrolls. This tomb has quarter square gadrooned balusters at the corners, and the ends display a serpent of eternity around an hourglass, with fronds above and feathers to the sides, along with further carving as a stand below. This tomb is dedicated to John, the son of Thomas Harper, who died in 1769. The adjacent faces of the monuments were not inspected.
