Description

The Church of St Michael and All Angels is a parish church with a history spanning the 14th, 15th, and 18th centuries, and a restoration in 1875. The tower is constructed of well-squared grey stone, while the south aisle and porch are of squared, coursed red stone, with cream ashlar window surrounds and grey dressings to the porch. The chancel uses less well-squared grey and red stone with larger quoins, and all are roofed with tiles, except for the tower which has stone slates. The church comprises a nave, south aisle, west tower, south porch, chancel, and organ chamber.

The west tower has two stages and a plain plinth. It features diagonally-set buttresses, a blocked west door with a four-centred arch, and above this, the arms of Free Miners, renewed in 1982, and a two-light Perpendicular window with no hoodmould. A single-light window with stone louvres is in the upper stage. The tower is topped with a plain parapet, two plain gargoyles at the corners, and a pyramid roof with an access dormer on the east. A half-octagonal stair turret is visible below the parapet. The south aisle has a plain plinth and one renewed two-light window with trefoil heads and a trefoil over, but no hoodmould. A round-headed doorway with a wrought-iron gate leads to the porch, which has projecting kneelers and gable copings, as does the aisle. The chancel plinth is higher than the aisle's, featuring a south window with two lancets. The nave and chancel roofs are continuous, with a gabled parapet to the chancel. The north chancel window is a two-light window with a quatrefoil over, but no hoodmould.

Inside, the two-and-a-half bay nave arcade consists of C15 octagonal piers with plain, moulded caps and chamfered bases. The south aisle has collar trusses with short king-posts, while the nave features an exposed collar rafter roof with angle struts. The chancel roof is similar, but without the struts. The walls are plastered and some stone paving remains. A small amount of C15 glass is present in the head of the north chancel window. An octagonal C15 font is topped with quatrefoil panelling and shields carved on the tapered stem. The polygonal stone pulpit, likely dating from 1875, is carved with symbols of the four evangelists. A Pyrke brass is set into the chancel floor (dated 1609), and a fine 1715 Pyrke memorial is on the south chancel wall, alongside other late 18th and 19th century wall monuments. The south aisle and porch were rebuilt in 1749, and the church restored in 1875, a period when the organ chamber was probably added.
