Description
The Butcher monument is a short chest tomb located about 4 meters southeast of the porch of the Church of St. Michael and All Angels, dating from around 1765. It is made of stone and features a flat lid with a moulded edge. The sides are raised panelled with scalloped corners that contain paterae, and the end sections are slightly recessed, continuing the end treatment of the monument. The ends display a Roman Doric frieze, with a raised panel below that has a moulded edge, and a Doric base beneath it. All of this rests on a cyma-moulded plinth. The monument commemorates Robert Butcher, who died in 1765, and his wife, who died in 1767, featuring two Gothic letters, copper-plate swirls, and long 'S's'. There is also a later inscription, cut differently, from 1805.
