Description

Underdean House is a detached house dating from circa 1820. It is constructed of random squared sandstone with some brick dressings, though the main east-facing garden front is of good ashlar. The roof is covered in Welsh slate and features a valley gutter, deep box eaves, and brick stacks. The house is arranged as a square block with parallel ranges. The entrance front has two storeys and one window, centrally positioned under the valley. This window is a sash with glazing bars, and is topped by a deep portico with fluted Doric columns, Greek capitals and bases, and a heavy tripartite entablature. The garden front is three windows wide, with two three-light sashes on the ground floor and a recessed blank panel in the centre. The first floor has three sashes, all with bars. Internally, original features include numerous four-panel doors in architraves, a contemporary stick baluster staircase, and rooms with high pitched ceilings. A wing has been removed from the left (west) side of the building. The building has group value.
