Description
Swan House is a dwelling that was originally a coaching house, dating from the 16th century with later extensions or modifications. The building features timber framed close-set studding in the back wing and in the rebuilt gable to the southwest. The southeast entrance wing is constructed of painted squared rubble, and the roofs are covered with Welsh slate.
The house has a T-shaped plan, with an 18th-century wing attached at right angles to the southeast front. An internal staircase is located in the corner between the northeast and northwest wings, leading up to the gable. There are stacks on both the southwest and northwest gables.
The entrance front is two storeys high and has three windows with broad casements. It features a 12-light oak mullioned window above a central six-panel door with a transom light, all set in a heavy but simple frame. This entrance is approached by three steps arranged in a semi-circle, with the 18th-century return wing to the right.
On the southwest elevation, which faces the garden, the left wing has a rebuilt timber-framed gable, while the principal wing on the right is three storeys high with two windows, set wide on either side of an internal stack. This wing has one, two, or three-light casements with oak mullions, all featuring simple stopped drips. The bottom right opening, which was formerly a three-light window, now retains its drip but has been reduced to a small two-light window.
Inside, the house contains much heavy framing and a two-flight newel stair with an octagonal newel.
