Description
The Dowding monument is a chest tomb located in the churchyard about 13 meters south-east of the south-east corner of the tower of the Church of St. Peter and St. Paul. It is possibly from the mid-18th century and made of stone. The tomb features a flat lid with a simply moulded edge and quarter-square balusters at the corners, which are carved with square scrolls and leaf tendrils. The sides are divided into two equal panels by a recessed line, while the ends have plain panels with a raised margin. It has a chamfered plinth, and the lettering on the monument has been affected by weathering. The earliest legible date is 1730, with a reference to a son who died in 1784. It records Thomas and Elizabeth Dowding, who died in 1806, along with later inscriptions that extend to at least 1862.
