Description
The monument to Elizabeth Butler is a chest tomb located in the churchyard about 3 metres south of the south west corner of the south transept of the Church of St Mary. It dates from the mid 17th century and is made of sandstone. The tomb features a flat top with a moulded edge and sunk margin panels, decorated with a scribed pattern that includes spear heads and fronts on the east side. The north side bears an inscription in all capitals, commemorating Elizabeth Butler, who died in 1668 and was the wife of Matthew Butler, a messenger to King Charles I and Charles II. This monument is a notable example of its period.
