Description
The Newton monument is a chest tomb located in the churchyard, approximately 3 meters north of the east end of the north aisle of the Church of St. Peter and St. Paul. This tomb dates from the mid-18th century and is made of stone. It features a plain lid with rounded edges and a hollow chamfer, with quarter-square gadrooned balusters at the corners. The main section of the sides is flanked by narrow panels that include a carved head with wings at the center, along with swags leading to pendant rings in the corners, adorned with pendant leaves and flowers down the sides. The ends of the tomb have raised rectangular panels. The inscription on the monument is weathered but likely commemorates John Newton.
