Description
The Higgs monument is a chest tomb located in the churchyard about 6.5 meters north of the north aisle of the Church of St. Peter and St. Paul in Westbury-on-Severn. It commemorates Silvanus Higgs, who died in 1764, and is made of stone. The tomb features a flat lid with a wide projection and a hollow chamfer. At each corner, there are quarter-square gadrooned balusters. The sides have a main central panel flanked by narrower ends. The top center displays a head with wings, with swags leading to pendant rings in the corners, and flowers and ribbons cascading down the sides. The main center for lettering is cut back at the edges to enhance the relief of the carving. There is additional carving on the flanking panels, and the ends depict a serpent of eternity surrounding an hourglass, with fronds above and scrolls below. The monument is somewhat sunk into the ground.
