Description
The Fryer monument is a chest tomb located in the churchyard about 6 meters southeast of the southeast corner of the tower of the Church of St. Peter and St. Paul. This mid-18th century stone tomb features a plain lid with a chamfered edge. The corners are adorned with quarter-square gadrooned balusters that have scrolls on a bulbous base.
On the north face, the main center is flanked by narrow panels, featuring a head with wings in the center, with drapery caught up with bows in the top corners and cascading down the sides to frame the lettering. The flanking sections display tendrils, fruits, and flowers. The south side has a rococo edge to the central panel, with bows and falling drapery in the flanking panels, which are weathered.
The west end has a raised margin with decorative carving that ends in two scrolls at the bottom, while the east end features a raised margin with a serpent of eternity surrounding an hourglass, with a scroll stand below and fronds above. The plinth is splayed. The south inscription is weathered away, while the north side is dedicated to Mary, daughter of James and Elizabeth Fryer, who died in 1760.
