Description
The Legge monument is a chest tomb located about 5 meters east of the north gate to Bell Lane in the churchyard of the Church of St. Peter and St. Paul. It was likely constructed in 1834 and is made of ashlar stone. The tomb features a plain lid with a moulded edge and rectangular reeded pilasters at each corner. These pilasters frame a raised rectangular panel with a moulded edge and scalloped corners on the long sides, along with anthemia in the corners. The ends of the tomb are similar but include raised circular panels. The plinth has a moulded top that supports the pilasters. This monument commemorates Major General Richard Legge, who died in 1834, his wife who died in 1845, and a Bennett who died in 1841, along with other inscriptions. The design of this monument is similar to that of the adjoining monument to the Bennett family.
