Description
The Hook monument is a chest tomb located in the churchyard about 7 metres north-east of the north-east corner of the tower of the Church of St Peter and St Paul in Westbury-on-Severn. It commemorates Richard Hook, who died in 1795, and is made of stone. The tomb features a flat lid with a moulded edge that is slightly indented at the ends of the long face. The sides have fielded panels intended for inscriptions, while the ends are designed with elongated rectangular balusters topped with fluted 'capitals' and a moulded base. The west baluster includes a raised ring on its stem, and the east baluster may have originally had a similar feature, which has been dressed off to allow for an added inscription. The original inscription is presented in a mix of upper and lower case letters, with some italic lettering and long s's, alongside later inscriptions.
