Description
South Lodge and gateway form the southern entrance to Rendcomb College, built around 1866 in the Italianate style by P.C. Hardwick for Sir F.H. Goldsmid. The lodge is constructed of ashlar and random squared and dressed limestone, with a red tile roof. It has an 'L' shape, featuring a two-storey tower on the east side and a covered entrance porch in the angle on the west side, adjoining the gateway. The lodge is single-storey with a basement on the east side, where the ground slopes away.
The front of the lodge features a canted bay with a rusticated plinth projecting to the right. Above the plinth is horizontal rustication, and three segmental-headed six-pane casement windows with moulded keystones that also serve as eaves brackets. Paired moulded stone eaves brackets flank the keystone/brackets. A 19th-century door with four sunken panels is located to the left of the canted bay, sheltered by a covered entranceway supported by two square Tuscan columns; decorative wrought iron panels are positioned between the columns. A matching canted bay projects out to the left of the entranceway. The tower has rectangular windows with long-and-short work architraves to the ground floor, on the north and east sides. The upper floor is lit on all four sides by two-light windows with octagonal and square leaded panes within round-headed surrounds, divided by Tuscan columns connected to Tuscan pilasters by a moulded cornice. A tympanum sits above each light. The tower's design reflects that of Rendcomb College. A modillion cornice and a finial with wrought iron decoration top the roof. The roof is hipped with finials; projecting lateral stacks have moulded cappings.
The gateway consists of a series of ashlar piers, approximately 2.5 metres high, linked by decorative wrought iron panels. The piers have moulded plinths and cappings. The gateway is double, with wrought iron gates flanked by two matching single gates.
