Description
The Orangery at Daylesford House is an early 19th century and late 19th century structure, likely designed by S.P. Cockerell for Warren Hastings. It is built of ashlar with leaded and slate roofing and has a rectangular plan featuring semi-circular bow windows at both the front far right and far left. There are similar projections at the rear right and left, which include blind windows. The curving walls extend back from these projections, each ending in a small turret. A later 19th century lean-to extension is located at the rear of the main body.
The main body of the Orangery is a single storey and consists of seven bays across the facade between the bow windows. A triangular pediment above the central three bays is adorned with a carved rosette in low relief. The tall pointed-arched windows have Gothick glazing and are set within pointed-arched surrounds, flanked by engaged pilasters that feature engaged crocketed finials. The central window extends down to form a doorway, with similar doorways located at either end of the building. The structure has a battlemented parapet with crocketed finials. At the rear, there are 19th century panelled doors set within 4-centred arches through each curved wall, along with similar doorways leading to the turrets. The walls and turrets also feature battlemented parapets.
