Description

The Waller family monument is a chest tomb located in the churchyard of the Church of St. Peter, attached to and situated to the west of the tower. It dates from the mid-19th century and is made of limestone. The tomb features a stepped plinth that spans the width of the tower. On the west end, there is an inscription dedicated to Edmund Waller, who died in 1788, set within a cinquefoil-headed panel. This panel is adorned with carved spandrels that display finely carved foliate decoration and plain shields at the center. Miniature engaged buttresses flank either side of the panel, and engaged columns are positioned at the corners. Each side of the tomb has five similar panels containing inscriptions for various members of the Waller family, with dates of death ranging from the mid-17th century to 1944. The tomb is capped with a moulded margin and features a recumbent cross with a cinquefoil hood on the capping.
