Description
The former road bridge on the dismantled railway is located on the west side of Spine Road in South Cerney. This bridge was part of the Midland and South-West Junction Railway, which opened in the 1870s, connecting Cheltenham to Andover via Swindon. It is constructed of red brick with blue brick coping and has a total length of about 60 meters. The bridge features 10 splayed arches that rise in a gentle curve, supported by transverse walls that are pierced by two round-headed and round-based hollow arches, allowing a view from one end to the other. The total width of the bridge is approximately 5 or 6 meters. Above the four courses that form the "voussoirs," there are four projecting courses of brick. Piers are present only at the south end. This structure remains an important element of the landscape and serves as a historic reminder of the former railway line.
