Description

Hill Barn and the adjoining stableblock are late 18th-century structures built from coursed squared and dressed limestone, topped with a corrugated asbestos roof. The barn has a rectangular plan with large projecting porches on both the east and west sides, and lean-to extensions on either side of the east porch. To the right gable end of the barn is the stableblock, which features lean-to extensions at the rear that are not of special interest. There is an off-centre left lean-to porch on the west side, with pitching windows on either side of it and a single-width doorway located lower right. A pitching window is present in the left gable end, and there is a low double-width doorway with a timber lintel leading to the porch from the east wall, above which is a single-light window with a flat-chamfered surround. Triangular ventilation holes are found in the side walls and gable ends.

The stableblock is two storeys high, with the upper storey serving as a loft accessed by stone steps at the front of the building. The ground floor has a central single-width doorway flanked by two 2-light windows, while the first floor features two small 2-light windows. Timber lintels are used for the openings on the ground floor. The gable ends of the barn, lean-tos, and stableblock are capped with flat coping. Inside, the barn consists of six bays with original roof trusses that include collar and tie beams along with double butt purlins. The upper room of the two-storey porch is plastered, indicating it was previously used as a granary.
