Description
Liddell House is a detached house built in the late 18th century or early 19th century, with extensions added to the west and rear in 1862. The exterior features coursed rubble stone faced in ashlar on the south side, topped by a stone slate roof that has a stone end stack on the right and a brick external stack with a stone flue on the left. The house is a single range of three storeys, with a single-storey extension to the west.
There are three windows on the upper floors, featuring triple plate glass sashes, and a similar arrangement on the ground floor, which includes a large canted bay from the 19th century on the right and central recessed double doors that are glazed and from the 20th century. Plat bands separate the floors. The rear of the house has a long sloping roof that nearly forms a true catslide, with a main entrance porch from the late 19th century and various windows scattered across the façade. The single-storey wing to the west has 20th-century glazed double doors and flanking plate glass sashes on the south side.
The house was purchased and extended by the father of Alice Liddell, who is said to have inspired the character of Alice in Lewis Carroll's "Alice in Wonderland." There is a small door in the hall that is believed to be the one mentioned in the story. At the time of the house's extension around 1862, Alice's uncle was the vicar of South Cerney.
