Description

Berry Farmhouse is a large farmhouse, probably dating from the late 16th century. It features rubble stone faced in roughcast on the west side and incised render on the south, topped with a stone slate roof and stone end stacks that have offset and moulded cornices. The building has a double range with two large gables on the south and a single rear gable on the west side. It is two storeys high with an attic and includes an additional single-storey kitchen range at the north-west corner, which has a roof that extends down as a lean-to canopy against the rear of the farmhouse in the internal angle.

The two gables on the south side have 2/3/3-light stone mullion wood casements with square hoodmoulds, while the ground floor features a 3-light window that has been lengthened to the right, likely in the 19th century. There are scattered stone lights elsewhere, including two single lights on the west side that indicate the position of a wooden newel stair. The main entrance is located on the west side and consists of a wide half-glazed door with a flat wooden hood supported by scroll brackets.

Inside, the farmhouse retains an oak plank and muntin partition on the ground and first floors in the south-west corner, along with chamfered and stopped beams. Many beams are present throughout the building, and most of the original wide floorboards remain. On the first floor, there is a small room featuring a wooden door head with a moulded and pulvinated frieze, which contains fittings made of small wooden cupboards. This room is said to be a nearly intact 18th-century "wig room," where wigs were stored and powdered.
