Description
The Royal Oak is an inn located at the end of a terrace, dating from the 18th century and likely built in two phases. It features an ashlar facade, with the rest constructed from coursed squared and dressed limestone, topped with an artificial stone slate roof and limestone and brick chimneys. The main structure is rectangular with parallel gables extending at the rear, and there is an extension that curves away to the left. There are 20th-century flat-roofed extensions at the back that are not of special interest.
The main body of the building has two storeys and an attic, which is illuminated by two 2-light roof dormers from the 20th century that include glazing bars. The facade has three windows; the first floor features 12-pane sash windows with wide glazing bars, while the ground floor has plate-glass sashes with horns and horizontal glazing bars. All windows are framed with plain architraves, and there is a band between the ground and first floor windows. The central entrance consists of a part-glazed door set within a Gibbs surround, and the building has a concave eaves cornice.
The extensions are designed in a similar style but have a lower roofline on the left side. They include three 2-light casements with horizontal glazing bars on the first floor and blind windows on the ground floor, along with a band between the ground and first floors. The main body has gable-end stacks, while the extension features a hipped roof with a gable-end stack. The interior has not been inspected.
