Description

The Old School House is a former school and school house, now divided into two semi-detached houses, built around 1870 for Harman Grisewood. The structure features coursed squared and dressed limestone and sandstone, with ashlar quoins and limestone stacks. The school house, located on the right, is 'T' shaped, as is the attached school on the left. Designed in the Tudor-Gothic style, the school house has two storeys, while the school, originally one storey, has been raised to two.

The gable end of the school house projects forward on the right, and the gable end of the school projects forward on the left, which includes a single-storey porch set back at right angles. The ground floor of both gable ends is illuminated by canted bay windows featuring 'Tudor'-arched lights with horizontal glazing bars. A parapet with pierced trefoil decoration is positioned over the right-hand window.

The windows include a two-light stone-mullioned casement with 'Tudor'-arched lights and a stopped hood above, a three-light 20th-century stone-mullioned casement with glazing bars and a stopped hood over the left-hand bay, and a round-headed niche above. There is also a single light window with a 'Tudor'-arched head in the porch on the left. The entrance features a 19th-century plank door with decorative hinges set within a 'Tudor'-arched surround, complete with carved spandrels and a stopped hood. Access to the former school house is through the gable end of the porch. The gables at the front are adorned with moulded saddleback gable coping, pointed cusping, and finials at the apexes. The interiors have not been inspected.
