Description

Sycamore House is a detached house, probably built in 1792, located in Cold Aston. It features coursed squared finely dressed limestone and a stone slate roof with ashlar stacks. The building has a rectangular, double pile plan with a single bay 19th-century extension on the right and a wash house at the rear right-hand corner. The main part of the house is two storeys high, with an attic and a cellar. The cellar is illuminated by a three-light hollow-moulded stone-mullioned window.

The facade has three windows, all of which are mid to late 19th-century four-pane sashes with horns set within moulded architraves that have small keystones. A central late 18th-century six-panel door is accessed by six steps, and there is a fine rectangular cobweb light above the door. The front also features a rectangular bay window with two four-pane sashes, and similar sashes are found in the side walls. A parapet rises to form a surround for a two-light dormer, which is set within a moulded surround with a keystone at the center. There is a narrow band at the level of the window sill.

To the right of the main body, the single-storey extension is lit by a two-light casement with horizontal glazing bars and has a parallel-ridged roof. The gable end stacks have moulded cappings. Inside, there is a late 18th-century staircase with stick balusters and a large open fire with a bressumer beam. Two segmental-headed niches are located at the rear of the fireplace, which were formerly fitted with doors. This house was built on the site of an earlier house that was destroyed by fire in 1788, and the cellar windows likely represent remnants of that earlier structure.
