Description

Downs Farmhouse is a former farmhouse dating back to the 17th century, with extensions added in the 18th century, occurring in two phases. It is constructed of coursed squared and dressed limestone with a stone slate roof. The farmhouse comprises a rectangular 17th-century range alongside a longer 18th-century range running parallel to the original building’s front. Outbuildings extend at right angles to the rear of this later range. Both ranges are two storeys in height, with an attic space. A single-storey wash house and outbuildings adjoin the later range. The 17th-century range has two chimney gables facing the road and contains 2 and 3-light casement windows with glazing bars. The 18th-century range has a four-windowed front overlooking the garden (west side), with a slightly later addition to the right-hand bay. The windows here are tripartite sashes with dressed stone lintels, incorporating keystones. A central 18th-century door, now with six flush panels (the upper four being glazed), is set within a mid-19th-century porch featuring ornate wrought and cast ironwork and a curved, hipped canopy. The interior of the farmhouse has not been inspected.
