Description
This building is a former barn and shelter sheds, located approximately 30 meters southeast of Newmans House in Southrop Village. It dates from the late 18th century and was converted into a detached house in the late 20th century. The structure is built of random rubble limestone with rubble chimneys and a stone slate roof. The barn features porches on the east and west sides and is now two stories high, while the shelter shed extending to the west is single-story. The barn has parapet gable ends and porches, with the south end topped by a ball finial. There are extensive rows of pigeon holes, with ashlar bands between those on the sides and porches. The barn doorways have timber lintels and plank doors, which have been adapted with small shuttered casements. A columbarium lantern with a sprocketed hipped roof and ball finial is located at the east porch. The glazing on the shelter shed is recessed between timber posts. An attached former two-bay cartshed at the south end has had its roof removed to create a pergola. The interior was not inspected. This building is very picturesque and serves as a good example of a barn conversion with minimal disruption to the exterior.
