Description
Upton House is a large country house built in 1752 for Nathaniel Cripps, possibly designed by John Strahan or John Wood. The building features coursed rubble stone with the south front faced in ashlar, and has a Cotswold stone-slate roof with multiple stone stacks. It has a square shape with the entrance located on the west side, which is accessed through a late 19th-century porch supported by rusticated pilasters. The main façade faces south and exhibits a symmetrical design in the Classical style, comprising three storeys and seven windows.
The house has a projecting moulded cornice with dentils, a balustraded parapet, and a pediment featuring a coat of arms in the tympanum above three central projecting bays flanked by four Ionic pilasters. The ground floor is rusticated and includes quoin strips. The central doorway is semi-circular headed, adorned with a pediment on brackets, double half-glazed doors, and a keystone with voussoirs. Flanking the doorway are 12-pane sash windows on the central projection, with two 15-pane sashes on each side, all featuring keystones and voussoirs.
On the first floor, there are seven 12-pane sash windows, each flanked by Ionic pilasters with cornices and pediments, the central pediment being segmental, and with a balustraded apron below. The second (attic) floor has three oval keyed oculi in the centre with moulded architraves, and on each side, there are two cambered head windows with keystones, impost blocks, and moulded architraves, all fitted with plain glass.
Inside, the south side features a central two-storey saloon with exquisite original plasterwork in a Classical design, including fluted Corinthian pilasters, pedimented doorcases, swags of fruit and flowers, Rococo panels, and a central fireplace with a carved head. There are single-storey rooms on each side of the saloon; the left room has been altered, while the right room remains intact and showcases similar high-quality plasterwork.
