Description
The Pigeon House is a large barn, probably dating from the late 18th century, that has been converted into a private house. It is constructed of random coursed rubble stone with flush quoins and a stone slate roof, featuring two rear stone lateral stacks. The building is a single range of two storeys with a large, projecting square tower on the south side. This tower has a hipped roof and a louvred lantern, and was originally a pigeon loft above a cart entry. The original timber lintel to the cart entry remains in place, along with a small projecting roof canopy supported on struts. The cart entry has since been filled in, with a lower timber lintel and two tapering square columns – likely removed from an animal shelter – forming a tripartite window. Most windows are paired casements, larger on the ground floor. A gabled entry on the north side now serves as the main entrance, featuring a renewed timber lintel supported by two widely spaced, very large, tapering square stone columns on square bases. Above this entrance is a two-light window and a slit vent in the gable, topped with a ball finial. Lean-tos are located on either side of the north entrance.
