Description

Bank Cottage is a detached cottage, reputed to date from the 14th century, with some parts possibly being medieval, though there is little clear evidence. It may have origins in the late 16th or early 17th century and was enlarged in the late 17th or early 18th century. The cottage is constructed of random coursed rubble stone in thin courses and features a stone slate roof with two stone chimneys, one at the left end and one on the ridge.

The building consists of a single long range of one storey and an attic, likely originally designed with a cross passage, and has a slightly smaller section to the south that may be the oldest part. The main part of the cottage on the left side has three gabled dormers along the eaves, each with paired wooden casements, arranged as one on the left and two on the right. The ground floor includes a three-light window on the left and two two-light windows on the right, all with renewed timber lintels. An original doorway, located just left of centre, has been blocked.

The right section features a small central gable with a two-light casement in a moulded stone frame, which likely originally had a mullion. On the ground floor, there are double glazed doors to the left and a two-light window to the right, both with timber lintels. The main entrance is situated at the south end. The rear of the cottage has a gabled projecting wing in the centre of the main section, with a gabled dormer across the eaves to the east and two two-light windows on the ground floor. Inside, there are two large fireplaces with timber bressumers in the main section, and chamfered plain beams throughout the building.
