Description

Orchards is a large, detached house dating from the late 18th century. It is constructed of coursed, squared, and roughly dressed limestone, with a concrete tile roof and ashlar stacks. The house has a rectangular plan, with a possible contemporary wing set at a right angle to the rear left.

The main body of the house is two storeys high and features a symmetrical facade of one window, a central bay that projects slightly and has a gable. All windows are large 16-pane sashes, with projecting dressed stone surrounds and keystones. Two segmental stone steps lead to a central 20th-century part-glazed door, also with dressed stone surrounds and a keystone. The right gable end has metal casements and French doors, all featuring glazing bars.

The rear wing is two storeys high with an attic, lit by two dormers in the roof eaves. These dormers contain two-light metal casements. Small 16-pane sash windows, with dressed stone surrounds, are found on the ground and first floors of the wing.

The main body and the rear extension have flat coping with moulded kneelers. The gable-end stacks have cappings and skirtings. The interior of the house has not been inspected.
