BROADWELL BROADWELL VILLAGE SP 2027 9/77 Pair of unidentified monuments in the churchyard of the Church of St. Paul cO.8m east of monuments to William and Dorothie Chadwell GV II Pair of unidentified bale tombs. Probably to members of the Chadwell family (q.v. The Manor House). C17. Limestone. Tomb on south flat-chamfered base, south side divided into 3 panels. Heraldic shield with raised zig-zag within central panel. Moulded margins to flanking panels each decorated with a single large diamond relief. Raised circle at east end bearing heraldic shield as on south. Lozenge decoration absent on north side. Flat- chamfered capping with roll moulding around its lower edge. Semi- circular 'bale' stone with bevelled ends above. Unidentified bale tomb cO.30m north. Flat-chamfered base. 3 sunken panels with wide margins either side Heraldic shield within circle with zig-zag and crescent within central panel. Raised palm leaf decoration in panels to either side. South side as on north but with one palm leaf panel missing. Simple capping with roll moulding along its lower edge. Ribbed 'bale' stone with incised decoration at either end.
