Description

Grenville House, formerly known as The Vicarage, is a large town house located in Lechlade Market Place. It dates from the early 19th century and is possibly designed by Richard Pace. The building is constructed of coursed rubble stone with alternating flush quoins, set on a plinth. It features a hipped stone slate mansard roof with a moulded wood eaves cornice at both levels, along with stone end stacks—one with a brick flue on the right and a dressed stone flue on the left.

The house is a single range with a small rear extension, also topped with a mansard roof. It stands two storeys tall with an attic and has three windows on the front. Each side has triple sashes with 8/12/8 panes, while the central window is a 16-pane sash that slightly projects forward, adorned with additional quoins, all featuring flush stone lintels and quoins. A plat band runs between the floors.

On the ground floor, there are Venetian triple sashes on either side in a similar style, and a central wide doorcase with a beaded stone semi-circular soffit. This doorcase is topped with a large decorative radial fanlight that has a lamp inset. The wide door, flanked by sidelights in a reeded surround, consists of two leaves, each with three different decorative fielded panels, which is a characteristic feature of Lechlade and is believed to be indicative of Pace's work. The building also has two flat-roofed dormers with six panes, set within moulded wooden architraves, and a central segmental pediment that includes a large glazed round oculus in a flush stone surround above the central section, which breaks forward.
