Description
The barn at Ampney Knowle is a large structure, likely built in the late 18th century. It is constructed from coursed and squared rubble stone, featuring quoins and a stone slate roof. At the north end, there are large, opposing projecting gabled wings. The west side includes a recessed door and a three-light casement on the ground floor, with a square pitch hole above and a small rectangular opening in the apex, all fitted with timber lintels. There is a slate-roofed lean-to in the angle to the right, which serves as a double garage.
The south end of the barn has eleven stone steps leading up to a recessed plank loft door that includes a cat hole and a timber lintel, along with a slit vent to the left. On the east side, the projecting wing features a very tall cart entry with a timber lintel and double timber doors, as well as a projecting hipped canopy supported by struts and a square opening above. To the left, there is a lean-to and a 20th-century shed.
The south gable end has a buttressed south-west corner and a double bay cart shed with two large timber lintels and a square pitch hole above. The north gable end contains a blocked pitch hole and a slit vent. The barn consists of six bays with collar and tie beams, including three original tie beams, and a partition wall towards the south end separating the barn from the cartshed and loft.
