Description

A group of four semi-detached cottages, dating to the early 17th century and built in two phases. The cottages are constructed from large blocks of coursed, squared, and dressed limestone, with a concrete tile roof and ashlar stacks that have been repaired using brick and artificial stone. The main rectangular body of the cottages has a later extension set at a right angle to the rear left. The main body is two storeys high with an attic, lit by three 20th-century two-light roof dormers. The front facade has a three-window arrangement, with all windows being 20th-century two-light casements, with diamond-leaded panes to the windows of the rightmost cottage (No. 4). The cottages have three 19th-century plank doors, each protected by a 20th-century open-sided, gabled porch. A hollow-chamfered stone-mullioned window with a stopped hood is located on the ground floor of the left gable end. A blocked 17th-century door surround with a segmental-headed stone lintel is present on the left side, with a 20th-century two-light wood casement inserted into the opening. Above this is an ovolo-moulded stone-mullioned window with a stopped hood on the first floor. The rear extension has one and two-light double-chamfered stone-mullioned windows, one of which has hollow-moulded chamfers. The cottages have axial and gable-end stacks, and the gable ends are finished with slightly stepped coping and a cross saddle. The interiors were not inspected.
