Description

A pair of estate cottages dating from 1856, built for Hatherop Castle Estate by A.G. Ponsonby. The cottages are constructed of coursed and dressed rubble stone with quoins, and have a slate roof with coped verges and finials. Two large stone ridge stacks are present, featuring diagonally set paired ashlar flues with moulded cornices. The long front range has a rear lean-to and dormer extensions, and is arranged as single storey and attic. Three front gables, each coped and with a finial, each contain a three-light stone mullion window with a square hoodmould and wooden six-pane casements. The ground floor also has three/five/three-light stone mullion windows with square hoodmoulds; the central light of each window on both floors is blind, masking an internal party wall. End porches, of single storey with gabled ends and finials, are situated on each side return. This pair of cottages is the only one of several built in the village by Ponsonby to retain its original facade.
