Description

The Village Institute and coach house, originally built as stables and a coach house around 1827, is now partly used as a meeting hall. It is constructed from limestone tufa with dressed quoins and window surrounds. The building features dressed gable kneelers with stepped bedding and ball finials on the gables. The roof is made of stone slate, with plain tiles on the reverse slope, and it has ashlar chimneys with simple unmoulded bands.

The structure is a long block with outshuts at the back, with the coach house located at the east end. There are two stable bays, one of which has a projecting porch wing. Each of the two stable doorways is flanked by two lunette windows, with an additional lunette window above one doorway, all featuring plain surrounds. One doorway and part of a lunette window are now obscured by the porch, which has a parapet gable topped with a ball finial. The porch doorway includes a stone lintel and dressed jamb quoins, and there is also a window on the west side.

The coach house doorway has been altered, featuring two timber lintels supported by a central artificial stone pier, with a lunette window above. To the right, there is a three-light recessed chamfered mullioned window. All lunette windows are currently boarded over. Small outshuts at the back are later additions.
