Description
Colesbourne Inn is a coaching inn built in 1827, as indicated by a datestone. It is constructed from limestone tufa with limestone dressings around the windows. The building features chamfered quoins, dressed gable kneelers with stepped bedding and cross-roll saddles, and ashlar chimney shafts with moulded caps. The roof is made of stone slate, with plain tiles on the reverse slope.
The inn is two stories high with an attic and has a central projecting wing that includes a porch. The front has three gables, with the central gable being more prominent. To the left of the doorway wing, there are two windows on the ground floor that are three-light and two-light on the upper floor, all of which are recessed chamfered mullioned with hoodmoulds and leaded casements. There is a two-light attic window in the gable. The doorway has a dressed surround and hoodmould, with a two-light window above it and a single light in the attic. Above the doorway is a date shield with the initials HJE.
To the right of the doorway wing, there is one window on both the ground and upper floors, both three-light, and a single light in the gable. A projecting chimney stack at the west end has two shafts: one is lozenge-shaped in plan, and the other is square and diagonally mounted. At the back, there is a central wing that projects and has a hipped roof. There are 20th-century additions at the back of the building. The inn was built to serve the new Cheltenham - Cirencester turnpike.
