Description

These are a pair of semi-detached estate cottages built in the early 19th century. They are constructed of coursed squared and dressed limestone with a stone slate roof and have three 20th-century stacks of dressed stone. The cottages have a long, rectangular plan and a symmetrical, one-and-a-half-story facade. The first floor has four half-dormers with two-light stone-mullioned casement windows. The ground floor has four two-light casement windows with stopped hoods. A 20th-century flush panel door is located on the left-hand side (No. 39), and a 20th-century part-glazed door is on the right (No. 40). Gable-end and axial stacks are set on plinths. Flat coping is present at the gable ends and on the dormers, and there are moulded kneelers. The interiors were not inspected. Limestone walls, approximately 2 meters high, constructed of coursed squared and dressed limestone connect No. 37 to No. 39 and No. 40 to No. 41 at right angles to the gable ends. No. 40 is owned by the National Trust.
