Description

Norton Hall and its service wing is a large house dating from the 18th century, with additions from the 19th century. The main house is constructed of red brick with stone dressings and a parapet, topped by a Welsh slate roof. Originally a two-storey, five-window classical design, the main facade was extended to eight windows in the 19th century. It features flat, gauged brick arches and large sash windows. A central doorway has a pedimented stone porch supported by paired Tuscan columns, with a coat of arms in the tympanum. A tripartite window denotes a later extension. The north-east facade has six windows, and the roof is hipped. The south-west end includes a tripartite window and a single-storey entrance wing with arched openings featuring dressed stone arches, keystones and imposts, topped by a parapet with corner urns; a canted bay window is placed to the left. An arched sash window is situated in the angle between the two wings of the main house. Brick chimneys are topped with moulded stone caps. The north service wing was considerably extended in the 19th century, using yellow brick, flat-arched windows with sashes and hipped Welsh slate roofs. At the end of the service wing is a coach house and courtyard, with a clock tower, all in brick, topped by a small timber dovecot with a weather vane above a tiled pyramidal roof. The main house interior retains some contemporary fireplaces, and shutters to all sash windows. The property is set within a large, landscaped park.
