Description
This is a former brewhouse, dating from the late 17th to early 18th century, with later 19th-century additions. It is part of The Old Brewery complex. The building is constructed of coursed squared and dressed limestone, with red tile and concrete tile roofing. A tall brick stack features coloured brick detailing and a sawtooth design at the top.
The building comprises a rectangular block incorporating a storehouse to the left of the brewhouse. The storehouse, dating from the late 17th to early 18th century, has two 2-light stone-mullioned casement windows on the north side, and two sliding garage doors on the right. A narrow band separates the ground and first floors. The brewhouse, dating from the 19th century, is set at a right angle to the storehouse. It has 2½ storeys, likely raised in height during the 19th century, and features a double door on the ground floor, a 2-light casement window, and a pitching window with a shutter on the second floor. An upper-floor plank door retains the remnants of a hoist over it. A former malthouse stands immediately west of the building.
Inside the brewhouse, incomplete remains of a former boiler are visible, where malt, hops, yeast, and water were once heated in a wall opposite the entrance. The brewhouse chimney forms a notable feature in the surrounding landscape.
