Description
A terrace of six houses built in pairs and stepped down a gentle slope, dating from 1859. The houses were designed by W.A. and initialled 'W.A/1859/I.A' as recorded on a plaque between numbers 3 and 4. The construction utilizes coursed, squared, and dressed limestone, with concrete tile roofs and stone stacks, some of which have been heightened using artificial stone. The windows are flat-chamfered stone-mullioned, with one, two, and three lights. First-floor windows feature double chamfers. There is tracery from the upper part of a two-light window above the datestone, along with a rectangular scratch sundial, formerly topped with a finial. A 20th-century part-glazed door in an artificial stone and weather-boarded gabled porch replaces the original entrance at number 1. Numbers 2 and 3 retain 19th-century plank doors, with a single inserted pane at the top of the door to number 3. Numbers 4, 5, and 6 have 20th-century doors: an eight-panel door to number 5, a 24-panel door to number 4, and a part-glazed door in an 18th-century style to number 6. These doors are set within flat-chamfered surrounds with single stone lintels pointed upwards at the centre. Gable end and axial stacks project slightly from the gable ends. The interiors have not been inspected. The terrace was once known as "The Hornets Nest" due to the argumentative nature of its former tenants, and it represents an important feature of the village landscape.
