Description

LOWER FIELD FARM is a farmhouse, enlarged in the 18th century and again in the 19th century, situated on the former Roman road known as Akeman Street. It has since been divided into two cottages. The building is constructed of coursed rubble stone with quoins, and has a slate roof. It features tall stone end stacks, one on the right and a ridge stack towards the left, originally there was an end stack. The main range has a rear extension and lean-to. Originally, it was five bays wide, with evenly spaced two-light stone mullion and transom windows, having voussoir heads, with four windows on the ground floor and a central doorway. A further bay was added to the left, with a window and door on both the ground and first floors, both featuring 19th-century gabled porches. There are two gabled dormers, one to the left and one central. A blind two-light stone mullion and transom window is present on each floor of the right-hand return. The left-hand return has 19th-century three-light stone mullion windows on both floors. Visible roof beam ends are evident in the wall on either side of the originally central bay of the main section.
