Description
St Peter's War Memorial is a First World War memorial that was erected in 1920. It is made of Cotswold limestone and bronze and is located outside to the north-east of the Church of St Peter, which was designed by SW Daukes and built between 1847 and 1848. The memorial is situated adjacent to Tewkesbury Road on the north-west side of Cheltenham town centre.
The memorial features an octagonal shaft with gablets and small pedestals at its base on intermediate elevations, culminating in a plain cross. It stands on a tall octagonal base that has a sunken panel on each side, resting on a two-step plinth surrounded by gravel. The base is supported by a plinth with a chamfered moulding, and the base for the shaft and cross includes ogee and ovolo mouldings. On the east side, a bronze wreath is positioned above a narrow cornice below the cross head. The inscription "LEST WE / FORGET / 1914-1919" is located at the base of the shaft on the east side, while the bottom of the base features the inscription "GREATER LOVE / HATH NO MAN / THAN THIS." The names of 134 men from the Parish who did not return are carved into the sunken panels on each face of the base.
