Description
The building is a burial chapel, dating to 1831, with a later addition to the right. It was designed by C Paul of Rowland Paul and Sons, Cheltenham, and built by George Wood and Thomas Newton at a cost of approximately £600. Originally serving as the chapel for the 'New Burying Ground' due to the overcrowding of St Mary’s Parish Churchyard, it is now used as a gymnasium.
The chapel is constructed in ashlar over brick, with a concealed roof and a brick stack at the right end. It is built in the Greek Revival style. The main part of the building is a single tall storey, with a lower single-storey range to the right. The front of the chapel features a central panelled door with a slightly 'battered' architrave, and a projecting porch with two fluted Doric columns in antis. Above the door is a frieze with wreaths, a continuous cornice, and a blocking course. The rear facade has end pilasters, a central entrance in a breakforward section, and round-arched multi-paned windows with radial glazing to the heads, set in plain reveals and with architraves and sills. The rear also has a frieze, cornice, and blocking course.
Inside, original features are retained, including deep coving and a dado rail. It is reputed that the original part of the building contains vaulted brick cellars.
