Description
Numbers 8 and 9 are a pair of houses with adjoining walls, built around 1824 to 1828, likely designed by architect John Forbes. The structure features ashlar stone over brick, with brick and stucco party-wall stacks and a slate roof. It has a double-depth plan with outer stairwells.
The exterior is two storeys high, with a basement and attics, and includes single-storey entrance bays that are set back on the sides. Notable ashlar detailing consists of a first-floor band, two crowning incised bands, a moulded string, a frieze, and a cornice with a stepped blocking course. The ground and first floors have 6/6 sash windows in plain reveals with sills. The ground floor windows have wider, segmental-arched openings and feature blind boxes with a lozenge motif. The basements contain original 4/8 sash windows. The end entrances have renewed steps leading to 6-panel doors, with the upper panels raised and fielded, and overlights, one of which includes margin-lights, all in plain reveals. The first-floor band continues over the entrance. The low walls adjoining the houses have plank doors and copings.
Inside, the houses retain original joinery, including panelled shutters. The adjoining walls have coped tops. Historically, the street was originally known as Montpellier Retreat, and Forbes was the architect for the Pittville Estate around 1835 to 1836. Reverend L Lewis resided at Number 8 around 1845. The walls also connect to Number 7 on the left.
