Description

Sundial Cottage is a semi-detached house that may date back to the late 16th century, as indicated by a sundial set into the left gable end, which is dated and initialled 'I 15 79 H'. The house was largely rebuilt in the late 18th century or early 19th century. The original structure features coursed squared and dressed limestone, but most of the building is now constructed from brick, except for the left gable end. The roof is covered with concrete tiles, and the ashlar stack has been repaired with brick.

The cottage has a rectangular plan and stands two storeys tall with an attic, which is illuminated by three 20th-century two-light roof dormers that have glazing bars. The facade is also lit by similar two and three-light casements. A central four-panel door is set within a moulded surround and is topped by a projecting flat wooden hood supported by freestanding wooden columns. The left gable end features two three-light double-chamfered stone-mullioned casements with stopped hoods, along with a two-light garret window that has leaded panes and a hood. Below the attic window is the sundial with a metal gnomon. The rear of the cottage includes 20th-century casements and dormers. The left gable end has flat coping with a roll-cross saddle, and there is a gable-end and lateral stack. The interior has not been inspected.
