Description
No 51, also known as Burgage Close, is a detached house dating from the 17th century. It features square-panelled timber framing, with the right gable end and projecting stack made of coursed squared and dressed limestone. The roof is covered with artificial stone slates. The main body of the house has a rectangular plan and consists of two storeys.
On the ground floor, there are one two-light and one five-light casement window, with the latter being an early three-light casement flanked by single 20th-century casements. The upper floor is lit by four two-light 20th-century eaves dormers that have weatherboarded gables. All windows are fitted with leaded panes.
An early studded plank door with strap hinges has been reused in the 20th-century lean-to porch located to the left of the projecting gable-end stack. Although the interior has not been inspected, it is said to contain a plaque depicting a crown, rose, and lion, along with gargoyles in a bedroom and oak panelling, according to the Women's Institute Architectural Survey from 1975. There is a 20th-century extension at the left gable end and a 20th-century glazed lean-to porch, which are not considered of special interest.
