Description

A pair of semi-detached estate cottages with an attached wall and outbuildings to the rear, dating from circa 1857-60. The cottages are constructed of red and pinkish-brown brick in a Flemish bond, which creates an irregular chequerboard effect, with ashlar dressings. The roof is tiled, with red and grey tiles. They are built in a Tudor Vernacular style.

The cottages are two storeys high and feature two first-floor windows and narrow single-bay entrances on the ground floor to each end. The main range has two windows on each floor, with lattice casements, sills, and hoodmoulds to all windows. The first-floor windows each have a gable above. The plank entrances have strap hinges and are set under hoodmoulds, with a stepped blind panel above. The returns have a 2/2 sash window to each floor, and a quatrefoil to the gable. Decorative bargeboards are present throughout. A central stepped ridge stack is a prominent feature. The interior remains uninspected.

To the rear, an approximately 10-metre by 2-metre wall abuts a pair of single-storey outhouses, which have central openings and plank doors. Lattice casements are present on the returns, and an oculus features in the gable. Decorative bargeboards are also present on the outbuildings.

The cottages are part of a significant group built circa 1857-60 for the Arle Court estate, commissioned by Thomas Packer Walter Butt and designed by JJ Rowland.
